Leaders as Change Agents Need:

Goldstein, J. 1994. The Unshackled Organization: Facing the Challenge of Unpredictability Through Spontaneous Reorganization. Portland, OR: Productivity Press, p.138

  • To realize that organizations are messy

  • To be able to tolerate ambiguity

  • To respond flexibly to events as they unfold

  • To reduce their reliance on normative models and programmed change strategies

  • To take advantage of accidents, crises, and fortuitous events

  • To apply a bit of the absurd, the strange, and the complex

  • To find a role for play, paradox, accidents and fun

  • To listen to the “noise” in a system – the unexpected, diverse phenomena occurring in or around the organization that are usually disregarded under normal functioning.

  • To be ready to change tactics, strategy and policy.

  • To encourage creative organizational responses, not by anticipating the unpredictable but by taking advantage of the unpredictable when it inevitably occurs.
